Хорошо оборудованный дом, который перевозится на автомобильном прицепе и устанавливается на специально оборудованной стоянке. Закон о строительстве передвижных домов и стандартах их безопасности 1974 [National Mobile Home Construction and Safety Standards Act of 1974] определяет его как "конструкцию, приспособленную для постоянного проживания", в чем состоит его основное отличие от кемперов [ camper] и рекреационных автомобилей [ recreational vehicle]. Начиная с 1976 Министерство жилищного строительства и городского развития [ Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S.] осуществляет контроль за дизайном и соблюдением стандартов передвижных домов, которые именуются "готовыми домами" [manufactured home]. Предшественником передвижного дома был трейлер [ trailer], пользовавшийся особым успехом во время второй мировой войны и после нее в связи с нехваткой жилья. В 1950-е, когда жилищная проблема была решена, производители трейлеров перешли на изготовление более крупных и комфортабельных конструкций. В наше время ширина передвижного дома 4-6 м. Многие дома состоят из нескольких секций, имеют сводчатые потолки и оборудованы мебелью и современной аппаратурой. Выделение мест для установки таких домов контролируется местными властями, которые разрешают размещать их лишь на территории т.н.
